Tried and tested: Salt Escape's Halotherapy

Salt Escape

Salt therapy is a relatively unknown concept in India, which is exactly what founders Jamsheed and Layla Mehta are trying to change with Salt Escape, Mumbai's first salt spa.

How it started

The idea germinated from Jamsheed's rhinitis, which had him in debilitating discomfort, gave him difficulty in breathing and a growing dependence on cortisol laden nasal sprays. Looking for an alternative when doctors told him his only option was to leave Mumbai, he stumbled upon Halotherapy while scouring the Internet.

What it is

Halotherapy or salt therapy is a natural, non-invasive and drug-free treatment that alleviates conditions caused by inflammation, congestion, and respiratory and skin allergies. The microclimate (humidity and temperature) of a natural salt cave is mimicked with precision and an hour-long session includes breathing in the micro particles that are calibrated in size according to the ailment e.g. for respiratory issues the particle size is small enough to be absorbed in the lungs and for skin conditions the flakes are large enough to be absorbed by the surface cells.

Who it's for

Adults and children with respiratory and skin conditions and also those prone to congestion, colds and coughs, seasonal flus, sinusitis, psoriasis and those with low immunity.

How I felt

Renewed and invigorated. I'm lucky to not be asthmatic or have a chronic respiratory condition, but I did have a niggling change-of-weather cold and my skin had reacted to the change of weather. I spent an hour in the therapy room and as I left I was breathing better. I slept soundly that night and the next day, the little red bumps on my skin had vanished. The Mehtas recommend you do five sessions for long-term benefits and I fully intend to complete the course.
