The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics still makes for a touchy subject, even today, over two decades after its dissolution, yet a lot of controversy and its many mysteries succeed in keeping the topic very much alive. Few people know how real life looked behind the iron curtain, and even fewer are those familiar with the incredible fashion and the boundless creativity defining the USSR people at the time.
Luckily, photographers Frant & Fifa decided to shed some light on the DIY kind of fashion describing the era, dedicating an ode to the Soviet woman, to “her resourcefulness and desire to remain beautiful in spite of all the circumstances”. As proof, all of the clothing used in this editorial (except for the footwear and certain accessories) represent original designs, sewn or purchased in the USSR in between 1965-1990.
