The upcoming documentary (slated to release on September 18) Jeremy Scott: The People's Designer trails American-born Scott’s journey in fashion. A designer label can only go as far it’s captain is willing to take it—and in the case of Italian luxury label Moschino, Jeremy Scott took it pretty far.

From the depths of Kansas city, Missouri—a long way away from the seasoned runways of Europe, Scott struggled to seek acceptance of his aesthetic. In the documentary he speaks of merging popular culture with high fashion, the lack of funds and the pressure of delivery for an iconic brand.

Scott took his outlandish approach to clothing and transformed it to the talk of the town. From McDonald's backpacks to Hersey's wrapper ball gowns, the designer took sophistication out of fashion and reached a global audience with influential friends like Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Rita Ora.

Did his drive to make it big take pop culture too far? One thing is for sure—Dorothy ain't in Kansas anymore.
