Style evolution: Kangana Ranaut

Viral Bhayani

It all began with a series of bright, embellished gowns, painstakingly straightened hair and make-up that always veered towards… a little too much. Since her early years in Bollywood, Vogue India's June cover star Kangana Ranaut has come a long way, not just with her choice of films, but also her wardrobe and beauty looks.

Not one to shy away from experimental looks, 2013 saw Ranaut's sartorial picks take an upward step: mixing the feminine with the unexpected. Some of her best looks from the year? A shimmering nude Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna dress with risqué sheer panels, that pretty pastel Sabyasachi sari paired with a striped blouse, and a red Burberry dress featuring a fishnet neckline. As the ensembles got more flattering, the hair and make-up relaxed, creating a perfect balance. If Ranaut wasn't bouncing her natural curls around, she was pulling them back in sleek buns.

Through the next year, Burberry emerged as Ranaut's clear favourite when it came to red carpet choices; starting with the pastel dress she wore sitting front row at the label's show (complete with ombre curls), followed by a brick-hued suit, lime green summer dress, and several more. For Karan Johar's birthday, it was a lavender skirt and shirt by the same name. Ranaut had now mastered the art of never looking overdone. Her Sanjay Garg lehenga was worn with nothing but a bindi, and her Anju Modi kurta was accompanied with zero accessories. Even in her Manish Malhotra moment, the actress relied solely on a simple bun to complete her look.

As of the last few months, Ranaut has been stepping out in some of her best looks so far. Her floral Sabyasachi lehenga and milkmaid bun had fans of all-things-Indian swooning, while the sequined Tom Ford number with fishnets and killer smoky eyes perfectly conveyed what Kangana Ranaut is all about: the surprise element.
