6 ways to wear unwashed hair

So we’re going to just come out and say it—despite the heat and humidity, you don’t need to wash your hair everyday. Daily shampooing, which may seem absolutely necessary (due to the aforesaid environmental factors) is actually doing more harm than good to your mane—it strips off the natural oils, leaving your strands parched. So give your tresses a day off from sudsing (or dry shampooing) and try these simple styles on your second-day hair.

Getting knotty

A topknot is the sneakiest way to conceal your second-day hair. Not only does it work better for unwashed strands, it’s also a super easy look to pull off.

Creative camouflage: Tie a bow around your knot or wear a silk scarf as a headband to add a fun twist to your updo.

Braid game

Braids are the perfect concealer for not-so-clean hair. The natural oils make second day hair easier to manage when tying a fishtail, undercut or milkmaid braid or a braided bun.

Creative camouflage: Weaving a colourful ribbon into your braid—try tie and dye or batik and make a quirky statement.

Pony up

The good ol’ ponytail keeps the hair off your face and hides your not-so-fresh scalp. Carefree, casual and very on-trend, this do is perfect to get you through second day blues.

Creative camouflage: Save the elastic for the gym and wear your pony with cool hair accessories like bejeweled bobby pins, strips of leather or Aztec bows.

Beachy waves

Create second day waves by finger combing—wrap individual sections around your fingers, hold for a few seconds and release. The natural oils in your hair should hold the slight wave. If you have a natural wave, mist with hairspray, scrunch, and go.

Creative camouflage: Pop in some miniature hippie braids for added texture.

Coif it up

Start with a dry shampoo to soak up excess oil and to refresh your roots. Add a small amount of product to pump up the volume and style.

Creative camouflage: Colour up with hair chalk to add spunk to your ’do.

The cover-up

If you feel self-conscious about your oily roots, add a cover-up—a headband or a bandana.

Creative camouflage: Add a touch of glamour with barrettes, neon headbands or embellished hairpins.
