If you have had access to WiFi for the last week, there is no chance you missed out on RiRi latest music video, in which the pissed-off flame-haired singer employs henchwomen to seek revenge. The "B**** Better Have My Money" music video has the women bopping heads with bottles and soaking in an inflatable pool on a yacht, amongst aiding kidnapping and arson. Curiosity got the better of us and we couldn’t help but get in touch with the chosen one from RiRi's squad.
The one-name wonder, Sanam, is a 25-year-old Seattle resident who works in a plant shop by day, and is an artist and Instagram addict, (which is how she was spotted by @badgalriri to star in her video). But all that's going to change now, as Sanam tells us about life after being Riri’s sidekick!
What was it like, being Riri's sidekick?
I think, being Riri's sidekick is every girl's dream and she definitely made me feel very important and beautiful, and it was empowering to be able to represent women. It was also lots of hard work, especially compared to the relaxed atmosphere of my day job at a plant shop, but I think everyone had so much fun and it was so exciting that we didn't even care about being tired. Everyone on the team did a great job of making sure my make-up and hair was on point the whole time and in between takes.
You're a badass through and through, (in the best possible way) challenging beauty norms, examining feminist tropes and having fun all along. What makes you, you?
Thank you! I had a rough time growing up being sort of the ugly duckling but I think that helped me find myself and learn to love myself even more as an adult. It took me a really long time to appreciate my culture and where I come from—which I think is common for a lot of brown women growing up in America—but it's so empowering now and what I love most about myself.
What's next for you?
I'm hoping to travel for the rest of the year; I have plans on going to India for a couple of months. I want to go see my family there and in Singapore. Kind of just taking it one day at a time and figuring out what I want to do next!
And finally, your eyeliner and eyebrows are so on point. What’s your trick?
Haha years of practice! I've been doing my own eyebrows since I was 13 or 14 so they've gone through a couple of really bad phases of being too thin or uneven, but I think they're in a pretty good place right now. I use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Dip to fill them in. I still have days where it takes me forever to get my eyeliner even, but I use pretty much any good black liquid eyeliner.
