Look east for inspiration and out come the oriental reds, Chinese collars, obi belts and layers of brocade. The theme of this year's Met Gala was 'China: Through the looking glass' and New York's royalty came out in their finest of silks delivering their inspired versions for the night.
The 'Princess of China' Rihanna stole the spotlight with a fur-trimmed, sunny yellow cape (and not much else) by Guo Pei, but Beyoncé's leave-nothing-to-the-imagination Givenchy number came as a close second—an honour that had a lot to do with the basic fact that she is the Queen Bee. The face we were most excited to see on the red carpet was Taraji P. Henson, better known as Cookie Lyon to Empire fans, wearing a fuss-free Balenciaga gown.
The eternal red carpet rulers—Lady Gaga, Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker--evidently put a lot more thought into their ensembles than the new kids on the block—Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley--who went with pretty and predictable.
Janelle Monáe, Sienna Miller and surprisingly, Cher too, found more subtle elements to go with the theme. While Monáe picked a two-piece H&M cape look, it was a Thakoon for Miller. Cher walked in Marc Jacobs with the designer.
The night oscillated between stylized perfection and a few who fought too hard to bring China to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Rest assured the Costume Institute's exhibit will be open all year long for those interested in tracing the real trajectory.
