The feeling is unanimous. The 68th Cannes Film Festival features the best line-up of films and the most talked about fashion moments in years. While the awards ceremony is merely days away, "Flat Gate" continues to make headlines. This phrase was coined midway through the festival to describe the furor which erupted after a high profile female attendee at the premier of Todd Haynes' critically acclaimed film, Carol, was turned away by security because she was wearing flat-heeled shoes. While those in the know feel the story was generated merely to generate hype—and this guest made it across the red carpet that night in Manolo Blahnik 'Hangisi Glitter' flats—most women are braving the non-stop party circuit in stilettos.
So it seemed at the Women in Film party. The lineup of A-list attendees, including Emily Blunt, Melanie Laurent, Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz, projected Calvin Klein's minimal cool aesthetic as they posed for official photographs with Francisco Costa, women's creative director for the brand.
At soirees hosted by the big name jewellers that enjoy an established presence at Cannes—namely Chopard and De Grisogono—the look is old-school glamour. Think show-stopping second-skin dresses flaunted by top models, including Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Doutzen Kroes, Petra Nemcova, Joan Smalls and Lara Stone.
A definite trend has emerged from the festival red carpet—namely, strong ultra-feminine glamour. Trouser suits—which were so hotly tipped to infiltrate the women's wardrobe as a viable eveningwear alternative—have not surfaced. Instead, cocktail dresses, like the silver satin knee-length Prada which Uma Thurman wore at Chopard's gold-themed party and the strapless Dior in which Natalie Portman crossed the red carpet, have dominated. As for the parties that follow the big premieres, it's gowns all the way, as India's most glamorous stars—Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif—displayed.
