The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have welcomed their second child, a baby girl. Like her older brother Prince George, the new member of the royal family was born at The Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. Kensington Palace announced that the baby was "safely delivered" at 8.34am, weighing 8lbs 3oz.
Prince William, who was present at the birth, left the hospital to huge cheers from the crowd at 4pm. He stopped to tell onlookers that he and his wife are "very happy" following the arrival of their daughter, before driving himself to Kensington Palace and returning with the couple's 21-month-old son, who waved to the crowds from the Lindo Wing steps. After visiting his mother, the Prince was then taken back to Kensington Palace.
Shortly after, at 6.15pm, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appeared on the steps of the Lindo Wing and gave the world the first glimpse of the Princess of Cambridge. Prince William then drove his wife and daughter back to Kensington Palace to be reunited with Prince George.
"Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received," read a statement from Kensington Palace. "They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes."
"The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," read a statement from Kensington Palace this morning. "Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."
In keeping with tradition, the Princess's birth was announced on an easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace at 12.34pm today, four hours after she was born.
