Everything you always wanted to know about the Vengaboys

It's never a bad time for a #throwback moment, especially when it means dancing like your 13-year-old fangirl self to the beats of the Vengaboys. The Vengabus is coming to Mumbai this Friday (May 8) and they want you onboard.

If you've spent your teen years in the '90s, Vogue promises that this is going to be one hell of a nostalgia-packed interview you're about to read…

The exact moment when the Vengaboys got together for the first time…

Haha, no idea! We were too drunk to figure.

How did it all begin?

The Vengaboys were formed from DJ Danski and DJ Delmondo, Dutch producers, who toured Spain and Ibiza in a bus between 1992 and 1997. They recruited background singers Rachael Carpenter and Olivia Ovington, fronted by singer Kim Sasabone for the music videos, to form a group in 1996. In 1998, three new members Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Roy den Burger and Robin Pors were added to current member Sasabone. In 2006 they returned to the club scene with new member Donny Latupeirissa a.k.a. Ma'Donny. The current members of Vengaboys are: Kim Sasabone, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Yorick Bakker, and Donny Latupeirissa.

The story behind your name…

Like in Spanish, the V is pronounced with a soft B sound, as such—Bengaboys. A guest-singer from Spain, for the producer's previous project Nakatomi, kept repeatedly singing "venga" in their songs, which means "come" in Spanish. This led to the name Vengaboys as their following project. So yes, Vengaboys actually means Comeboys.

What are the Vengaboys currently listening to?

Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, and Madonna.

How excited are you to perform in India?

We are so looking forward to being reunited with our fans in India. It is awesome to be so far from home and still find a solid fan base. That is precious to us. But we are also looking forward to making some new friends as well. And show them THIS is the way WE party!

What are you bringing down for your Indian audience?

Expect a sing along party. Reminisce about the good old times as all our hits pass by.

If you had to write a song for India, what would you call it?

India Likes to Party!

What have the Vengaboys been up to?

We started touring again in 2006 and have maintained a busy tour schedule. Most of our shows are based in Europe and Australia.

The funniest fan mail you've received

One time there was a guy who told us he used to sleep with two plastic blowup dolls in his bed. He had cut out the faces of Kim and Denice from a poster and stuck it on the dolls. That was pretty funny.

What would the Vengaboys today advise their teen-selves?

That's an awesome question! We would say to ourselves: keep on doing what you're doing. It made us who we are today and we are very happy with that.

What do you think about the music scene currently prevailing?

Yes music since the 90s has changed a lot. Beats got more complex with different grooves—and we like that. We try to evolve as well, while still staying true to ourselves. We love the pop scene as it is today. A lot of great artists have joined the pop pool.

Any message for India?

Everybody comes for our hit songs "Boom, Boom, Boom," "Ibiza." and "We Like to Party"… but we have something special for India. We'll be performing a ballad; something that our fans are not used to hearing from us. We're rehearsing that for India.

What's next?

It's going to be a busy year. What springs to mind now is our summertime tour in the USA. We're very much looking forward to that.

Watch the Vengaboys perform your favourite songs on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Courtyard Phoenix Marketcity Kurla at 7:30 pm. Get your tickets here.
