The Cannes Film Festival has always been known as a place where fashion trends break. The haute couture evening gowns along with jewels by Bulgari, Chopard and De Grisogono, which adorn beautiful actresses crossing the red carpet at nighttime movie premieres, have typically commanded the spotlight.
But a few years ago, as a line-up of distinctively cool young women, including director Sofia Coppola and Charlotte Gainsbourg, carried out their role as jury members in casual chic ensembles by Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga respectively, European designers recognized that Cannes by day—with its sunny skies and picturesque seaside scenery—is the ultimate backdrop to showcase their work. This means that the best pieces from the cruise and ready-to-wear collections are always out there on actresses promoting films vying for the Palme d'Or Best Picture Prize, as well as the stylish female jury members attending the afternoon screenings to scrutinize the competition films. And so it is fascinating, and also instructive, to observe how designer pieces make the leap from the runway to real time situations, where looking good matters.
On day one of the festival, for example, jury member Sienna Miller displayed that the right accessories—specifically, stilettos adorned with ankle straps plus a wide belt—lend polish and proportion to an off-the-shoulder dress. (Miller's was by Balenciaga.) Contrasting accessories often complete an outfit best, which Naomi Watts exhibited by flaunting sky-blue sunglasses and red Jimmy Choo sandals with her embroidered Peter Pilotto dress at the photo-call for The Sea of Trees.
Lupita Nyong'o demonstrated how to wear a dress in of-the-moment white with true ease, pairing her Oscar de la Renta sleeveless shift with block-heeled Nicholas Kirkwood heels. Livia Giuggioli Firth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan proved that comfortable sandals work even at Cannes—if they are metallic. Firth hosted a yacht party to celebrate her film project, The True Cost, wearing a striking sundress by ethical fashion brand Beautiful Soul London and silver flat sandals. The gold platforms Bachchan sported with Stella McCartney flared trousers demonstrated she was putting her feet up after long nights of working the red carpet.
At the photo-call promoting her role as an FBI agent in the thriller, Sicario, Emily Blunt took advantage of a cooler-than-average festival day to preview a dress from Peter Pilotto's autumn/winter 2015 collection. Following on from Emma Stone and Cate Blanchett appearing at their press conferences in black ensembles—by Oscar de la Renta and Alexander McQueen, respectively—Blunt's Seventies-inspired cream and pastel patchwork pencil skirt Peter Pilotto number was both refreshing and emphasized that softer prints are key for next season.
