Every once in a while, you wish for long, perfectly curved lashes, and in a moment of impulse purchase yet another lengthening mascara to make your dream come true. Except, more often than not, reality looks dark, a little too dark.
You end up thickening it a little too much, and clumping together those lashes; you're probably most likely using an expired mascara and your wand pokes are one too many. Here's when we come in to give you the ultimate guide to mascaras—your know-it-all booklet, if you may—with the help of MAC's global make-up artist, Sonic Sarwate.
DO…
Curl your lashes before applying mascara.
Apply mascara from the base of your lashes, and then go towards the tips.
Check for smears after you apply. If your mascara smudges, wait for it to dry and then wipe it off with a clean, dry cu-tip and flake it out.
Protect your eyes—look down when brushing your upper lashes, and raise your chin, and look at the ceiling when brushing your lower lashes.
DON’T…
Load up the brush with too much product, to avoid clumpiness.
Pump the wand inside the bottle too much, as extra air can contaminate the product.
Use mascara for not more than 6 months after opening it.
Five tricks to fabulous lashes
1. Choose a mascara that is good for both, length as well as volume.
2. Use the zigzag technique when applying mascara, starting from the middle of the lashes, going upwards.
3. Opt for dark colours like black, brown and blue to give that added voluminous effect.
4. Use the tip of the brush to reach the tiniest of lashes in the corners of your eyes for maximum volume.
5. If you have really short lashes, especially the lower ones, use wands that are smaller. Sarwate suggests MAC's Extended Play Lash.
Three tips to take care
1. Avoiding touching the mascara wand directly with your hands.
2. Always use a tissue to clean the rim of the bottle or wipe off any excess product from the wand.
3. Keep your mascara to yourself! Sharing, in this case, is not caring.
