An elegant white champagne-lunch in the capital, studded with the city's slick set saw the coming together of designer Suneet Varma and Arttd'inox for a three-year long collaboration. Deepikka Jindal, executive creative director and MD Arttd'inox, sees this collaboration adding the "emotional element" that will help the brand reach "today's global consumer". The collection launches this fall, and is a sort of love child made up of the couturiers' sophisticated brand of glamour and Arttd'inox' trademark minimalism, Varma fills us in on what to expect.
What sparked the collaboration between you and Arttd'inox?
Deepikka Jindal has been a client and friend for over two decades now. A little while ago, I got a call from her to see if we could collaborate. And since then, we have spent a lot of time together—visiting their factories, stores, and debating and discussing the need for luxury in interiors. I've always wanted to work with metal, and once we saw the potential and possibilities of collaborating we decided to collaborate for the next three years. It's very exciting and the possibilities are endless.
Do you approach your collaborations the same way you do fashion, is there going to be a story to this collection?
Yes, there is a story that will be told, I am now working on the inspiration and the first few ideas. I will treat this design collaboration as I do my couture—it will be inspired and a story will unfold, only this time in metal. I want to take steel and turn it on its head as a luxurious product by combining it with other precious metals like gold, sterling silver and precious gemstones—using Agra-styled pietra dura, Hyderabadi Bidri work and other Indian traditional techniques.
What sort of products can we expect in the collection?
I am still working on the initial sketches and ideas, but it will be everything from steel and gold etched platters to large drinking glasses and an assortment of bowls and vases. As steel is a very hard metal, it will be exciting to see how I can create luxury products. The end products will be modern and contemporary that define new luxury for the future.
