What's that art exhibit docked in Goa?

'Tales From Darkness' is a nomadic exhibition that has been travelling the world since 2010, with a focused mission to highlight how various artists interpret the subject of Alptraum—nightmare.

Conceptualised by Berlin-based artist Marcus Sedlinger, the exhibit is versatile with media and location—and includes works on paper, mixed media, sculpture and site-specific installations made by artists from Germany, South Africa, UK, Slovenia, US and now India. The concept is simple; as the show moves from country to country, new works made by artists curated locally, on the same theme, are added in every destination.

The wandering exhibit is currently on display at it's twelfth destination, Sunaparanta, Goa Centre For The Arts and has made the white and blue grand heritage Portuguese mansion its home up until April 30. Brought to Goa by artists Marcus Sendlinger and Caro Suerkemper, it was initially housed in a different space but after being brought down by landlord issues, the team at Sunaparanta soon rescued them.

The showcase on display here has been curated by Leandre D'Souza. And, the local flavour has been added by artists Chrislogo Furtado, Katharina Kakar, Kedar Dhondu, Mandakini Devi, Viraj Naik among others.

The exhibit is an almost subliminal experience, capturing the complex relationship between the individual and collective consciousness, while revealing multiple interpretations of the horrific. From the haunted and grotesque to the carnal and fantastic; from collective trauma to individual persecution, there is space here for a variety of ideas on what constitutes nightmares in today's world.

'Tales From Darkness' is on display until April 30 at Sunaparanta Goa Centre For The Arts, 63/C-8, Near Army House, Altinho, Panaji – 403 001, Goa. Tel: +91 832 2421311.
