It usually takes Indian actors years of experience in our industry before they find a foot on the international stage. However, Tina Desai is one such actress who is changing the game. This 28-year-old swiftly moved from an Indian reality show (Get Gorgeous) on to Hollywood with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel series in 2012. Soon she's making her international television debut as Kala, a scientist from Mumbai, in the upcoming Netflix show, Sense8, which releases on June 5.
The show, written by The Matrix creators, is about eight people from around the world who witness a tragic episode together and become mentally and emotionally linked. "It's an intense human drama in the sci-fi premise with action, romance and comedy put together. Kala is a scientist and a believer of god, causing a paradox in her personality between logic and faith," says Desai. The actress opens up about her three big experiences in recent times:
She's worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood
Tina played the role of Sunaina, Dev Patel’s love interest, in the two-part movie series, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. About working with Patel, she says, "Dev is a very action-packed guy. You have to keep up with his energy. He's a spontaneous actor and can do a single scene in fifty different ways and take you by surprise every time". Barring Patel, she has also shared screen space with Oscar-winning actress, Judi Dench and more recently Richard Gere, who features in the sequel. "They're all really senior actors and don't need to make an effort towards you as a newcomer but they were always so encouraging. This one time I was walking down a path and as soon as the scene was over, Judi (Dench) and Bill (Nighy) were all praises," says Desai.
She's rubbed shoulders with the royal family
This year, Desai was thrilled about the fact that the British royal family hosted the premiere of her film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. "The prep for the meeting was exciting as we got a dossier which told us about all the rules we had to follow when we meet and how we were supposed to greet everyone. How we can't be too extreme and can only talk to them when they talk to us; it was all really fascinating. They were very calm when we met them and are well aware of India; they have a special fascination with the fact that Indians dance in their movies," says the model-turned-actress.
She shot across eight countries in two months
Sense8 has been shot at nine different locations across eight countries. "After two months into the shoot, we all lost track of day, date and time and had to start relying on our phones to tell us where in the world we were and what time of day it was," says Desai, who was shooting the first season of twelve episodes over a period of seven months.
'Sense8' releases on Netflix on June 5.
