THE Devil Wears Prada is set to be made into a stage musical. Broadway producer Kevin McCollum - who previously oversaw shows including Rent and Avenue Q - told The Hollywood Reporter that a recent partnership with 20th Century Fox will see him transform successful films into musicals, beginning with the 2006 fashion film and Mrs Doubtfire.
Whether The Devil Wears Prada's original cast would consider treading the boards for the stage adaptation has not yet been discussed, but let's dare to dream. Meryl Streep revealed in 2012 that she'd consider reprising her role - as fearsome (or misunderstood, depending on your perspective) Runway editor Miranda Priestly - if a sequel were to materialise, following the release of writer Lauren Weisberger's follow-up novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, but the film has yet to happen.
Streep - who conceded she'd "have to lose the f***ing weight" to take on the role - was not the only one keen to step back into those vertiginous heels, Emily Blunt also expressed a desire to transform into sarcastic assistant Emily again, admitting: "I think I would do it. We all were told to go on these skinny diets for the first time, but I'd be up for it."
The film's lead, Anne Hathaway, meanwhile, is currently appearing in a stage production of Grounded at the Public Theatre, but has never appeared on Broadway. A musical performance in the big-screen version of Les Miserables earned her an Oscar in 2013, and her recent appearance on Lip Sync Battle became an internet sensation, so the time could be right for a stage musical debut.
And even if McCollum can't tempt the original cast to return, there will surely be actresses queuing up for the "job a million girls would kill for".
