Anurag Kashyap's much awaited jazz-age drama Bombay Velvet starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar hits theatres today. Costume design occupies prime importance when it comes to period films (recent case in point: Dibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!)—Vogue catches up with swimwear designer duo Shivan Bhatia and Narresh Kukreja of Shivan & Narresh on designing costumes for Rosie.
How did the project come about?
The project came following our work on vintage swimwear for Life of Pi which we had undertaken back in 2010. Since Bombay Velvet required the recreation of an era in its costumes—especially the signature swimwear of the '60s—we came on board with Niharika Bhasin (who styled Bombay Velvet) for the project.
What were you references when you designing the pieces?
The references were the retro style bikinis from 1960s, mostly donned by Parsi women by the vintage pools of Bombay.
Your favourite scene from the movie
It has to be the scene featuring the swimsuit for the sheer historical and educational value of how the women back in the day were ahead of their times when it came to body confidence and loving their curves, while also managing to be culturally-rooted and relevant.
In what aspects is designing for a film different from designing a collection?
Designing for a film is vastly different and complex from a collection as it entails a strong framework to work under, which can be the character's personality to different eras and the prevalent stylistic directions. A collection in that way is much simpler to execute as the framework is about creativity in an unexplored territory.
A piece from the movie that can be worn today
The high-waisted bralet bikini sported by Anushka Sharma. It is on trend and is quite a classic for a summer holiday or a honeymoon.
