A little bit of mystery goes a long way. A beautiful woman with bare breasts and black lace briefs is one thing, but throw a black veil over her and she’s something else again. “Sobre a nudez forte da verdade, o manto diáfano da fantasia,” said Eça de Queirós (“Over the strong nudity of truth, the diaphanous veil of fantasy.”) Model Maja Krag, in Jasper & Botan’s shoot for Bambi Magazine, could be a literal interpretation of the phrase. Physical nudity, like all forms of truth, is both beautiful and terrifying. Nakedness is equivalent to vulnerability, and our discomfort with nudity is discomfort with the truth. Makeup, clothing, even the art of photography: all are cloaks of fantasy and imagination, designed to transform reality, as sure as the black veil exists to alter and deepen our perspective of Maja’s body.
