The words “fashion” and “Texas” usually conjure up visions of the Neiman Marcus set flaunting colorful designer duds and jewels. Not in Austin. The college town and live-music mecca attracted a more down-home, dressed-down crowd during the 10-day South by Southwest festival, which wraps its film, music and tech showcase on March 22. Denim shorts and overalls ruled, Converse kicks were the preferred shoe of choice, and a girl’s idea of dressing up meant throwing a scarf over a short sundress. Guitar cases were optional, but judging from the lines that spilled out of venues all over town, it couldn’t have hurt to have said, “I’m with the band.”
