Citizens of Humanity Expands Denim

A GLOBAL CITIZEN: Citizens of Humanity is expanding its denim world. The Huntington Park, Calif.-based company has acquired a made-in-Japan men’s line called Fabric-Brand and renewed its focus on niche women’s label Goldsign. At the center of this flurry of activity is Jazmin Kim, who joined earlier this month from rival AG as Goldsign’s creative director and the design director for Fabric-Brand’s first women’s offshoot, which will launch in spring 2016. Founded by Simon Miller, who’s also Citizens of Humanity’s men’s creative director, Fabric-Brand uses only Japanese denim for its men’s jeans that are cut, sewn, washed and finished in Japan and retail from $250 to $495. Kim said she’ll continue that process with the women’s lineup, which will include crewneck T-shirts, shirt jackets and boyish jeans. With Goldsign, which had been designed by a team following the 2013 departure of founder Adriano Goldschmied, Kim aims to appeal to the older, sophisticated customers who buy the jeans, which retail from $198 to $308. While Citizens of Humanity declined to disclose annual sales or the purchase price for Fabric-Brand, the company hopes the bigger portfolio will give it an international boost.
