Ingestible beauty: pretty pills

A crop of "ingestible beauty" products are making us rethink our topical bathroom cabinet and nightstand regimen and making us look closer at how our bodies react to what we eat. The concept: beauty from the inside out. Not a new idea, no, but it's making way for beauty pills new and old that promise to turn back the clock, give you longer, stronger hair and nails. They also promise to stave off ageing, fight adult acne, prevent inflammation from certain beautifying surgeries like botox and protect you from immune-system attacking bacteria that causes skin irritation. Is this all bunk or can beauty vitamins really give us these results in real life?

Vogue asks a nutrition and skin expert and identifies the six top ingestible beauty supplements to add to your daily pill case, STAT!

Supple, Soft Skin: Hyaluronic Acid + vitamin C

This topical miracle worker is praised by nutritionists too as being the ultimate in whole-body beautifying, especially when taken with immune-boosting supplement vitamin C. Dr. Natasha Turner, New York Times bestselling author of The Supercharged Hormone Diet and practicing nutritionist says hyaluronic acid to your diet will help give your skin its youth back. "It's a building block of collagen," she says. "That combined with fat soluble vitamin C and topical green tea facial treatments will help all assist with skin healing and aging." Actress Olivia Munn swears by this skin secret too.
Try: Spring Valley Hyaluronic Acid With Vitamin C

Age-Defying Rejuvenation: Glisodin (with lycopene)

When your body takes in oxygen and metabolizes it, harmful by-products are created—the waste that's created when your body absorbs oxygen. To help protect, our bodies create antibodies to defend our immune system and cells from infection. Glisodin helps strengthen the immune system defenders so they can better protect and slow the ageing process. Another super supplement ingredients is lycopene. Think of lycopene as the stuff that makes the skin of a ripe summer tomato so resilient and taut: it combats free-radicals and boosts your skin's metabolism—meaning new skin cells and repair for damaged ones. Say goodbye to sunspots, hyperpigmentation, and adult acne.

Stronger, Longer Hair Skin And Nails: Biotin

Biotin keeps your metabolism running efficiently and makes sure your digestive system isn't dragging its feet. It's a part of the B-family of vitamins that you should have in your roster of supplements anyway, but taking an additional 500 IU to 1,000 IU of the supplement will help strengthen nails, hair and give the skin a noticeable resilience. Studies in France have shown that use of biotin over time has helped treat muscle inflammation and multiple sclerosis.

Heal Acne, Dark Spots And Scars: The Omegas

Regulating blood pressure and inflammatory responses in the body, Omegas repair the skin to its former youthfulness and help against injury. Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 fatty acids help to rejuvenate the top dermis from the inside out, reducing acne scarring. Take two capsules daily says Turner: one dose 20 minutes before a workout and the other with a meal. Studies have shown that Omegas reduce swelling naturally. No need for painkillers such as acetaminophen (found in Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil) which means you can heal from injuries faster than ever. Good for beautifiers and runners alike.
Try: Natrol Omega 3-6-9 Complex

Turn Back The Hands Of Time: Resveratrol

Think of it as the hyperactive version of your Omegas: Resveratrol is found in the skin of antioxidant-rich fruits (such as grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and mulberries). When a plant is under attack by insects, bacteria or fungi, it is able to fight these off thanks to phenols. Similarly, phenols help the body respond and protect itself against viruses, skin infections and defend against bacteria and germs. It's said that drinking a glass of red wine a day or a few times per week helps with circulation, encourages good cholesterol, and heart health.
Try: Jamieson Red Wine Extract With Grapeseed Extract

Get Rid Of Wrinkles: Vitamin K2

Helping bring calcium to the right places in the body, vitamin K2 is the messenger you need in your circulatory system. Studies have shown that wrinkles are actually an indicator of low bone density, a sign that the body is depositing calcium in the wrong parts of the body—like your arteries. "It keeps them supple, lessening the risk of coronary artery disease," says Dr. Turner. It also helps with varicose veins—a direct symptom of poor cardiovascular health. "It's also beneficial for brain health, memory, breast and liver cancer protection because of its role in cell growth and regrowth. It's an affordable supplement and something that many of us are deficient in." One capsule per day for overall health and eating vitamin K-enriched foods (fermented soybeans, eggs, milk, butter and cheeses) will help rid you of wrinkles.
Try: NOW Vitamin K2 100 mcg
