South Africa to Launch Costume Institute

CAPETOWN’S NEW MUSEUM: South Africa has ambitious plans to establish a Costume Institute modeled along the lines of similar institutions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This Costume Institute will be part of the new Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), the continent’s first contemporary art museum, which opens in early 2017 in the Silo District Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA, Mark Coetzee, said that the institute’s shows were envisioned as “major retrospective exhibitions, researched by capable curators, which will honor a designer whose work has contributed to a critical engagement with the costume arts in South Africa.” He added that all costume designers from Africa and its diaspora would be celebrated and exhibited. A gala to reveal plans for the institute was held Feb. 28, during which there was a show of couture creations by Chris Levin, Marianne Fassler, Gavin Rajah and Thula Sindi, all well known designers in South Africa.
